Japan Gallery "Sakiori Weaving" Exhibition

During the exhibition, on September 27 ( Fri ) and 28 ( Sat ), a workshop will be held for visitors to experience Sakiori weaving.

Japan Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works on the theme of "Sakiori," a traditional Japanese recycling technique that has been handed down since the Edo period (1603-1868).

"SAKI-ORIGAKI" is a technique of ripping kimono and cloth into small pieces and weaving the ripped cloth as weft yarn. This recycling technique was effectively used in the days when thread and cloth were precious. At that time, cotton was mainly used, but today, a wide variety of materials are used, including clothes and tenugui hand towels, and more free and unique designs are being produced.

In addition to the Sakiori cloth itself, this exhibition presents a variety of practical works such as bags, table centers, and noren curtains made of Sakiori cloth. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, and no two pieces of Sakiori fabric, made from recycled old cloth, are alike.

In this exhibition, we will introduce a number of works based on "tomesode," which is the formal wear of kimono, and "beniki," which is the lining fabric of kimono, in particular. Although those works are the same black or red fabric, they feature subtly different textures due to the individuality of the old clothes and the different warp threads. In particular, please pay attention to the related works of the "TOMEKON : KURO" and "BENIKEN : BENI" series.

In addition, on September 27 ( Friday ) and 28 ( Saturday ), a workshop will be held for visitors to experience Sakiori weaving. The workshop will be limited to 6 people per day on a first-come, first-served basis, so please come early.

We look forward to seeing you there.
