Fukuyama City Shinichi Museum of History and Folklore, Exhibition Room 1
Chrysanthemums have been one of the most popular flowers among people since ancient times. Many designs of chrysanthemums can be seen in familiar items such as clothing and furnishings. The cultivation of chrysanthemums began in the Kanamaru district of Shinichi Town in the former Ashina County in the Taisho Period (1912-1926) and reached its peak in the late Showa Period (1926-1989), making it one of the largest chrysanthemum seed and seedling producers in Japan. 1985 saw the establishment of Shinichi Town as the town flower, and when it merged with Fukuyama City in 2003, the chrysanthemum became the city flower of Fukuyama City along with the rose. This exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the merger of Shinichi Town with Fukuyama City, and introduces chrysanthemums cultivated in Shinichi Town and tools with chrysanthemum motifs found in daily life.
